Smart PDF Split & Rename
Split one PDF into separate files wherever a keyword, invoice number or employee changes, and name each file from its own text, on your device.

One PDF often holds many separate documents: a month of invoices, a payroll run of payslips, a batch of scanned forms. Splitting it by page numbers is easy. Splitting it where each document really starts, and giving every file a sensible name, usually means doing it by hand.
Smart PDF Split & Rename finds where each document starts from the text on its pages: a keyword such as “Invoice No”, a “Page 1 of N” marker, a value that changes such as an employee ID, text in an area of the page you mark, or the PDF’s bookmarks. It then names each file from values it reads, so you get “INV-1042 - Example Ltd.pdf” instead of “document_17.pdf”.
You stay in control. You review every split and every name before anything is saved, scanned pages are read with OCR on your device, and each split file is checked against the original pages before you can download it, with an audit report of what was done.
Add one or more PDFs. Before anything is split, the tool shows what each file contains: pages, bookmarks, form fields, passwords and digital signatures.
Pick a preset such as Payslips, Invoices or “Page 1 of N”, or set your own rule: a keyword or pattern, a value that changes, text in an area of the page, bookmarks, every N pages or page ranges. You see how many documents the rule finds before you continue.
Check where each document starts. Move, merge or add splits by hand where needed. Anything unusual, such as a missing value or two neighbouring documents with the same value, is flagged.
Build names from values read on each document, such as an employee name, invoice number or date, and format them, for example dates as YYYY-MM. Edit any name directly; duplicate names are flagged.
Each split file is checked against the original pages before download. Save the files one by one or as a ZIP, together with an audit report of every document, value and change.
Payslips and invoices are confidential. Your PDFs are processed in your browser and never leave your device, and you don’t need an account.
Keywords, regular expressions, changing values, page areas, “Page 1 of N” markers and bookmarks, plus every N pages, page ranges and manual splits.
Combine several values in one name, format dates, change case, add counters, and correct any name by hand before saving.
Pages without usable text are detected and read with OCR on your device, in English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese or French. Uncertain words are highlighted for you to check.
Every page ends up in exactly one file, in its original order. Joined documents, missing values and duplicate names are flagged before you download.
Each split file is compared with the original pages before it can be saved. The audit report records what was done, including any links, signatures or security settings that changed.
Your PDFs are read, split and named in your browser, on your device. They are never uploaded, and your browser blocks this page from connecting to the internet or loading anything from other websites. Text recognition (OCR) for scanned pages also runs on your device, using recognition models downloaded from puffinkit.com. Nothing from your files is kept after you close the tab, apart from a temporary download file in one case explained in the Cookie Policy. A split template, which holds rules and names but never document content, is saved in this browser only if you choose to save it.
PuffinKit never changes your original files. See our privacy policy.
No. Your PDFs are read, split and named in your browser, on your device, and are never uploaded. Your browser blocks this page from connecting to the internet or loading anything from other websites. How this works.
Choose to split where a page contains a keyword, and enter the word or phrase that appears at the start of each document, such as Invoice No or Payslip. Each page where it appears starts a new file. You can search only the top lines or an area of the page, skip pages that contain another phrase, or use a regular expression for patterns such as INV-\d+.
Use the Payslips preset. It starts a new file whenever the employee changes and names each file from values such as the employee’s name or ID and the pay period. Payslips for the same employee that are next to each other are joined and flagged so you can check them. Guide: split payslips by employee.
Use the Invoices preset. It starts a new file when the invoice number changes, so multi-page invoices stay together, and names each file from values such as the invoice number and customer. Guide: split invoices by number.
Yes. Pages without usable text are detected and read with OCR on your device. Choose the language of your documents: English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese or French, or a combination. The wrong language gives confident but wrong results. Uncertain words are highlighted for you to review. Guide: scanned PDFs and OCR.
Many statements and invoices print “Page 1 of 3”, “Page 2 of 3” and so on. The preset starts a new file at every “Page 1 of …”, so each document keeps all its pages, even when page counts differ.
Yes. Choose the bookmark level to split at, optionally only bookmarks whose title contains certain text, and use the bookmark title in the file name.
Yes. Split every N pages, for example every 2 pages for two-page forms, by ranges such as 1-3, 4-10, or by choosing the pages yourself. Every split can be corrected by hand before you download.
Yes. Enter the password when asked; it is used only on your device and is never stored. By default, the split files are protected again with the same password to open them and the same permissions; if you didn’t enter the owner password, you choose a new one for the split files. If the PDF’s owner has restricted page changes, you need the owner password to split it.
Splitting a signed PDF always invalidates its digital signatures, because a signature covers the whole original file. The tool warns you first, removes the signatures from the split files and records this in the audit report. The split files are not signed, so keep the original if you need the signed version.
For the pages in each file, yes: links, form fields, bookmarks, page labels, layers and accessibility tags are carried over. Links to a page that ends up in another file are removed by default; you can choose to point them to that file instead. Each change is listed in the audit report. Document scripts are never copied, and attached files are copied only into a split file you choose.
There is no usage cap and no paid page limit. The practical limit is your device’s memory, so the tool has a size and page limit for each kind of device and tells you before processing if a file is over it. Computers handle much larger files than phones.
The audit report (_split-audit.csv) lists every split file with its original pages, its name, the values used and where each came from (text, OCR, a bookmark or typed by you), any flags, and the result of the checks. It is written in English whatever the interface language, so reports can be compared and archived.
Yes. Save your rule and file name pattern as a template. Templates are stored only in this browser and contain rules, patterns and page areas, never text or pages from your documents. You can also export a template as a file to share with colleagues.
Not with its built-in Split command, according to Adobe. In an Adobe Community thread from August 2026, Adobe’s Community Manager answered that Split can’t split by keyword and suggested page counts, bookmarks or custom JavaScript instead. This tool splits by keyword, pattern or changing value directly. PuffinKit is not affiliated with Adobe.
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many PDFs you split.
