About this tool

Combining PDFs sounds simple: put one file after another. In practice you also want the pages in the right order, a scanned page the right way up, an unwanted page left out, and the bookmarks, links and form fields still working in the combined file. And you may not want to upload a contract, a payslip or an ID document to a website to do it.

Merge PDF combines your files in your browser. Arrange whole files, or work page by page across all of them: move pages into any order, rotate them, leave pages out, duplicate a page or insert a blank one, and undo any step. Bookmarks, internal links, form fields, comments and attached files are carried over to the merged file.

Nothing changes silently. Before you merge, the tool tells you what can’t be carried over as it is, such as digital signatures, page labels or links to pages you left out. After merging, every page of the new file is checked against the page it came from before you can download it, and the result lists every change.

Useful for

  • Anyone sending several documents as one file, such as an application, a claim or a tender
  • Accounts and HR teams combining invoices, statements or payslips
  • Office and legal teams putting together document bundles
  • Students combining scanned notes, assignments and certificates

How it works

  1. Add your PDFs

Drop several PDFs onto the page or choose them, and add more at any time. Each file shows its pages and what it contains, such as bookmarks, form fields, a password or digital signatures.

  2. Put the files in order

Drag the files into the order you want, or use the move buttons. Replace or remove a file without starting again.

  3. Arrange the pages

Switch to the page view to work across all your files: move pages anywhere, rotate them, leave pages out, duplicate a page, insert a blank page or select pages by range. Undo and redo any step, or go back to the original order.

  4. Check what will change

Before merging, the tool lists anything that can’t be carried over as it is, such as digital signatures, page labels or links to pages you left out. Where a decision is needed, for example about password protection, it asks you.

  5. Merge and download

Each page of the merged file is checked against its original page before you can download it. Save the file and review the list of changes; your arrangement stays open if you want to adjust it.

Why use it

  • Nothing is uploaded

Your PDFs are processed in your browser and never leave your device. There is no account, no usage cap and no watermark.

  • Every page, in any order

Reorder files and pages, also between files, rotate, leave out, duplicate and insert blank pages, with undo and redo and a preview of the final order.

  • Bookmarks, links and forms carried over

Bookmarks are combined in order, internal links still go to the right page after you reorder, and form fields keep their values.

  • Password-protected PDFs

Open protected files with their password, which stays on your device. If all your files share the same protection, the merged file gets it too; otherwise you choose.

  • Nothing removed silently

Digital signatures, page labels, document scripts and links to pages you left out can’t be carried over as they are. You are told before merging, and every change is listed afterwards.

  • Checked before you download

Every page of the merged file is compared with the page it came from: same content, same text, the right rotation, and nothing from pages you left out. If a check fails, there is no download.

Your files and privacy

Your PDFs are read and merged in your browser, on your device. They are never uploaded, and your browser blocks this page from connecting to the internet or loading anything from other websites. A password you enter for a protected PDF is used only on your device and is never stored. Nothing from your files is kept after you close the tab, apart from a temporary download file in one case explained in the Cookie Policy.

PuffinKit never changes your original files. See our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. Your PDFs are read and merged in your browser, on your device, and are never uploaded. Your browser blocks this page from connecting to the internet or loading anything from other websites. How this works.

How do I merge PDF files into one?

Add your PDFs, put them in the order you want and merge them. To change individual pages first, open the page view and move, rotate or leave out pages, or insert a blank page. The merged file is called merged.pdf unless you choose another name.

Can I reorder, rotate or remove pages before merging?

Yes. The page view shows the pages of all your files together. Move pages into any order, also between files, rotate them by 90°, leave pages out, duplicate a page or insert a blank page. You can select pages by range and undo any step. Pages you leave out are not in the merged file at all: nothing from them is copied.

Does merging reduce quality or make text unsearchable?

No. Pages are copied as they are, not re-rendered or compressed, so images keep their resolution and text stays text: you can select and search it as in your PDFs. Every page of the merged file is compared with the page it came from, and if a check fails, there is no download. A page changes only where you ask, for example when you rotate it, or where the tool tells you, for example when a digital signature is removed. A scan without a text layer stays an image, because merging doesn’t add text recognition.

Can I combine scanned PDFs?

Yes. Scanned pages are copied into the merged file as they are, and a text layer added by your scanner’s text recognition (OCR) stays searchable. Merging doesn’t add text recognition, so a scan without a text layer stays an image. Pages scanned the wrong way round can be rotated before merging.

Can I add images or Word documents?

No. Merge PDF works with PDF files only. If you add a JPG, PNG, Word or other file, the tool tells you it isn’t a PDF and doesn’t add it. To include one, first make a PDF of it, for example with your app’s Save as PDF or Print to PDF option if it has one, then add that PDF.

Can I merge PDFs on a Mac, a Windows PC or a phone?

Yes. It runs in a current web browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, with nothing to install. On a touch screen, press and hold a page to move it. Phones have less memory than computers, so the tool accepts smaller files there and tells you before merging if your files are over the limit.

Does it work offline?

It is not an offline app: you need an internet connection to open this page, which loads the tool from puffinkit.com. Your files are not sent over that connection. They are read and merged on your device.

Are bookmarks and links kept?

Yes. The files’ bookmarks are combined in the order of the merged file, and links inside a file still go to the right page after you reorder pages. You can also group each file’s bookmarks under its file name, use only the file names, or leave bookmarks out. Bookmarks and links that point to a page you left out are removed, and each removal is listed. Page labels such as “i, ii, iii” are removed, so viewers number the pages from 1.

What happens to form fields?

Form fields are carried over with their values and combined into one form. If two files have fields with the same name, for example two copies of the same form, the later fields are renamed so their values stay separate, and the tool tells you. You can also flatten the forms, which turns the fields into ordinary page content. Dynamic XFA forms can’t be merged.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

Yes. Enter each file’s password when asked; it is used only on your device and is never stored. If all your files have the same protection, the merged file is protected in the same way. Otherwise you choose between a new password for the merged file and an unprotected file, which you have to confirm. If a file’s owner has restricted page changes, you need its owner password.

What happens to digital signatures?

Merging creates a new file, so the digital signatures of the originals can’t stay valid. The tool asks you to confirm first, then removes the signatures, including how they look on the page, and the result says that the merged file contains no digital signatures. Keep the originals if you need the signed versions. Certified PDFs can be merged only after you confirm that you are allowed to change them.

Is there a file size or page limit?

There is no usage cap and no paid tier. The practical limit is your device’s memory, so the tool has a size and page limit for each kind of device and tells you before merging if your files are over it. Computers handle much larger files than phones. Merging doesn’t compress: pages are copied as they are, and fonts used by several files are kept once for each file, so the merged file can be larger than you expect.

How do I split a PDF again after merging?

Use Smart PDF Split & Rename. It splits a PDF every N pages, by page ranges or wherever the text changes, for example at each new invoice number, and names each file from its content. It also runs in your browser without uploading your files.

Do I need an account?

No. You can use this tool without signing up.
